Install Java

Java is an application that is used by many programs. It is important that you have the latest version installed. Many problems can be fixed by installing the latest version of Java. Java has a built in updating mechanism that may periodically prompt you to update. However, sometimes it is necessary to manually install Java from the Java website.

Check for the latest version.

To check your version of Java:

Windows XP:

  1. Click the Start Button > Control Panel
  2. Select Classic View in the left hand pane
  3. Double-click on the Java icon. A Java Control Panel should open.
  4. Under the About section, click the About button
  5. A window should open that will display the version you have installed.

Windows Vista:

  1. Click the Start Button > Control Panel
  2. Under the View By menu, you may need to select small icons
  3. Double-click on the Java icon. A Java Control Panel should open.
  4. Under the About section, click the About button
  5. A window should open that will display the version you have installed.

Windows 7:

  1. Click the Start Button > Control Panel
  2. Under the View By menu, you may need to select small icons
  3. Double-click on the Java icon. A Java Control Panel should open.
  4. Under the About section, click the About button
  5. A window should open that will display the version you have installed.

 

Manually Install Java

On Windows based computers:

  1. Open a web browser (we recommend Mozilla Firefox) to: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
  2. Click on Free Java Download
  3. When prompted, either Save or Run the Java install file.
  4. If saved, you will need to open the file from where you saved it. (commonly found on the Desktop, in My Documents, or Downloads folders)
  5. Double-click the Java install file, and Click Continue on any Windows security prompts
  6. The Java installer will launch. On the Welcome to Java screen, select Install
  7. You may want to de-select “install the Yahoo! Toolbar” (Or any other toolbars) before clicking on Next
  8. If your internet browser is still open, you will be prompted to Close Browser and Continue
  9. It may take a moment to install Java. Once it is finished, click on Close.

On Apple computers:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen
  2. Click on “Software Update”
  3. Install any Java related updates that are found. If no updates are available, then you have the latest version of Java.
